Make Your Own Play Dough

Kids can spend hours making shapes, creatures, and pretend foods out of Play-Doh – there are endless possibilities. Making and playing with Play-Doh teaches kids about cooking and develops hand muscles they’ll need to write.
The best place for this project is the kitchen, because you’ll need to cook the dough on the stovetop for several minutes.

For this recipe you’ll need:

• A small sauce pan
• A wooden spoon
• A plate
• Measuring cups
• Measuring spoons
• Flour
• Water
• Salt
• Vegetable oil
• Cream of tartar
• Food coloring
• Glitter (if you want to make your dough sparkly)

Add 1 cup of flour, a quarter cup of salt, 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and two teaspoons of cream of tartar to your sauce pan.

Add ten drops of food coloring to the pan.

Stir everything with a wooden spoon until most of the lumps are gone.

Once the mixture looks smooth, an adult should put the pan on the stove over medium heat and continue stirring. Make sure to show your kids what’s happening in the pan so they can see the process!

Continue to stir until you have a large doughy mass. It happens quickly.

Turn off the heat and place the dough on a plate to cool for a few minutes. Knead the dough, add glitter if you like and play!

If you store your dough in a plastic bag or airtight container, it will keep for several months.
